Review by Christine Grasser: I found this book to be amusing in that the author puts the reader on the spot specifically for the listener to realize that the text has to be read as it is written. The written text is bold on most pages, capitalized in others, and the even text color changes to draw emphasis to the tone. A combination of these three text formats causes the reader to change tones with the words on each individual page. The language varies in richness, using high frequency words as well as larger, more robust words (such as “ridiculous” and “preposterous”). The inherent meanings of the text come alive during a read aloud.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This book is a great way to introduce and reinforce following the text across the pages. The may help struggling readers that rely heavily on illustrations for comprehension, the silly vocabulary will likely engage them; the silliness of the language may also appeal to reluctant readers as well.
