The Cow That Laid an Egg
Author: Andy Cutbill
Illustrator: Russell Ayto
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Year of Publlication: 2006
Genre: Fantasy
Horn Book Review: 3
Summary: Marjorie, the main cow/character, did not feel special because all of the other cows could do handstands or ride bicycles. The chickens on the farm come up with a plan to make Marjorie feel more special, but it does not go the way that they expected.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The reviews that I found did not seem to explain how they felt about the book as much as they seemed to summarize what had happened. The reviewers agree that this book is very comical and that the children will enjoy the fact that a cow lays an egg. The reviewers enjoyed the cartoon looking images and the way that they are set up in a collage.
Review by Sarah Custard: I believe this is a good book to have around the classroom, even if the children are not yet capable of reading it by themselves. This story is meant to entertain the students because they know that cows do not lay eggs. The children will enjoy looking at the pictures while trying to read the story. I believe the children will enjoy the way that the story ends.
This book would be useful when teaching children about what is real or made up. Based off the title of the book, the students could predict what is going to happen and then decide if it could actually happen or if it is something that the author made up. It would be a good way to teach students to predict what will happen in the book. By reading the title, the students could come up with different ways for the book to end or what could happen throughout the book.
