Review by Christine Grasser: I agree with the Horn Book review as Pigeon’s emotions, such as jealousy, stubbornness, and tantrums, being relatable to children. Mo Willems uses bold colors and capital letters to emphasize Pigeon’s disdain of Duckling being able to get a cookie. I especially like the very first page, where Pigeon expresses his dislike of the title of the book. Mo Willems’ illustrations compliment of Pigeon’s expressions compliment the flow of feelings in the story.
This book would be useful when teaching…
“The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?” is a good book to teach how printed text and color adds to the story. In this book, Mo Willems uses contrasting colors and bold highlighted printed text to emphasize Pigeon’s dissatisfaction of not getting what he wants. Using “!?” and “!?!” punctuation marks throughout the story can also be a good basis for a punctuation mini-lesson.
