The End
Author: David LaRochelle
Illustrator: Richard Egielski
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books
Year of Publication: 2007
Genre: Fairytale
Horn Book or Kirkus Review Ratings: Horn Book (2) and Starred Kirkus Review
Summary: This story does everything backwards, starting with THE END. Through soggy knights, rabbits, and tomatoes, we end up at ONCE UPON A TIME.
Summary of Professional Reviews: LaRochelle tells his story from the ending to the beginning starting out with "and they all lived happily ever after" and ending with "once upon a time." The illustrations are very detailed. Kirkus says that"Egielski supplies plenty of visual juice, beginning with a packed crowd scene featuring a knight, a princess, a dragon, a huge tomato, two giants, a pair of smiling lemons, a swarm of rabbits, a blue flying pig and more," and Horn Book says that "the pictures nearly come off the page."
Summary by Katie Henderson: This story is one that will enlighten any child that reads it. It has a twist right from the start. The story starts out with "and they all lived happily ever after," and ends with "once upon a time." Children can follow the hilarious plot very well with the talking tomatoes and terrifying knights. This book is definitely a page turner for all young children. The art work is so loud and bright, just like the book itself. The pictures emote a funny emotion that is very suitable for this story.
This book would be useful for teaching...children about how normal fairytales are set up. This story was obviously set up backwards, but this can be incorporated into a lesson about he typical setup of a normal fairytale. Perhaps, the children can re-write the story written in a traditional manner for a group or individual project.
