Summary: The students make a gingerbread man then leave him behind. The gingerbread man goes on a journey around the school in order to find the students who made him.
Summary of Professional Reviews: According to the Horn book review online, this book received a rating of 2. They really enjoyed "Murray's rhyming text features some great cook-centric lines, and the refrain offers enough variation to keep readers on their toes." They also enjoyed the "cartoon-panel" illustrations by Mike Lowery that gave the gingerbread man an "abundance of personality.
Review by Madie Henderson: I really enjoyed the rhyming technique Murray portrayed in her book to create a nice flow. The repetition of "I can catch them! I'm their gingerbread man!" was humorous because it counteracts from the saying, "you can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!" Also, the illustrations by Mike Lowery were very creative and a great way to use speech bubbles and conversation techniques.
This book would be useful when teaching… Teachers could use this book to read in the beginning of the year. This could be a great way to introduce some different faculty in the building. For example, the gingerbread man meets the gym teacher and the principal. Teachers could use this opportunity to introduce their own gym teacher and principal of their own school. Also, this book could be used when demonstrating the different movements the gingerbread man was using. Word such as slip, run, slides, skip are different vocabulary words teachers could introduce to his/her classroom.
