The Giving Tree
Title: The Giving Tree
Author: Shel Silverstein
Publisher: Harper & Row
Year of Publication: 1964
Genre: Poetry
Horn Book or
Kirkus Reviews rating: 3
Summary:
This is a story of a boy and tree and
their strong bond to make each other happy. Towards the end, the boy unthinkably
does what the tree asks to make it happy which ends with an unexpected but
touching ending.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
This book about a boy and
a generous tree, who gives him all she has, has long been cherished as a tale of
unconditional, selfless love, and likewise condemned as a story of complete
codependency. Its controversial themes now live on in a new format, with the
same short text per page and evocative line drawings now made larger for easier
sharing with a group.
Review by Rokaya:
This touching story shows the reader
how important love and caring is and what extent people will go to make someone
or something happy without thinking of the circumstances. This is a touching and
loving story with a warm ending.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This would be a good book to use when teaching students on being caring and sharing. Teachers can have students make of list of nice things that they can do for their classmates. The teacher can then hang these around the world and when someone does one of the things, the teacher will take it down. When all of them are taken down, the teacher will do something nice and give them all a treat.
