Review by Sasha Ishak: The Keeping Quilt is a captivating story that definitely keeps a reader engaged. After reading multiple texts produced by Polacco I indeed am astonished by her connection to her life and most importantly her family. Her captivating story about traditions of a Russian family make the text inviting because the reader can relate to their life if they are not originally from the United States. The written texts informs the reader of a families traditions year ago. In order to allow the reader to emerge in this dated life of Russian family Polacco decided to stain the pages and make them look extremely old. This idea is fascinating and it works perfectly with text. Emotions are extremely noticeable in this text because the author allows the reader to feel how important this quilt actually is know matter the circumstance. The text is written in a way that makes it fairly easy to understand, especially to young readers. - The Keeping Quilt can be used in a classroom during a Language Arts lesson. The teacher can first read the book to the students as a read aloud then he/she can discuss the book and what was important about it. After this the teacher can have the students bring in something from home that represents their culture. As soon as everyone has at-least one thing representing their culture they must create a short paragraph describing what this element represents in their life and culture. Doing this will help students practice their writing skills, and it will also help them develop a better meaning of theme and how it isn’t only present in a text.
