The Pencil
Title: The Pencil
Author: Allan Ahlberg Illustrator: Bruce Ingman Publisher: Candlewick Press Year of Publication: 2008 Genre: Humor Horn Book rating: 1 |
Summary: A pencil is alone in the world so he creates one thing after another, until he creates an overzealous eraser who wreaks havoc on the pencil’s drawings. It works hard to combat the eraser and return everything that was rubbed out.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The pencil goes to work creating the world, but annihilation looms as an eraser, who’s meant to fix issues, tries to erase everything, including the pencil. Ahlberg’s madcap story creates an inspiring world. |
Review by Crystal Ball: The pencil wants to fill space with people, cats, dogs, houses, trees, and many other things. As it goes along creating, some of the things start to complain about silly hats, big ears, and ridiculous sneakers, among other grievances. So, the pencil creates an eraser to fix those issues. However, the pencil had no idea how out of control it would become, ultimately rubbing out the entire universe, except for the pencil itself who kept trying to protect itself. What could possibly stop an eraser who’s capable of erasing everything the pencil draws? Allan Ahleby humorously paints this picture only to take it all away, and Bruce Ingman’s illustrations make you feel like you are looking at a freshly drawn picture, erasers shavings and all.
