The Perfect Nest
Review by: Brian Beck
Author: Catherine Friend
Publisher: Scholastic
Year of Publication: 2007
Genre: Fiction
Summary: A silly book about a cat who attracts a chicken, a duck and a goose to lay an egg in his nest. As he is going to scramble them up into an omelet, the eggs hatch and the cat unwillingly becomes the caregiver. Has a great ending.
With a " Starred Review" rating by Kirkus, it is for sure a favorite: "The gouache illustrations cluck with humor and details that add giggles: the face-on double spread of Jack in his bib overalls with whisk in one hand and spatula in the other; the wolf scene in which Jack wears a red riding hood; and Jack’s egg-yolk eyes. Perfect fine-feathered fun." Other reviewers agree, saying it is "a fun choice for read aloud time," as well as "clever and amusing."
My Review: First of all this story has a great ending. Children will love the illustrations and the humor that spreads onto every page. The author wanted the reader to see that things things do not always work out how you think they will and sometimes the end result is just perfect, regardless of your original plans. It is comical, yet heart warming and an excellent book.
How to use it in the Classroom:
As a personal favorite, I would have this book for a read aloud. It is a quick read, but offers the opportunity to ask questions while reading, so it would be perfect for a classroom read aloud. It shows readers that plans can change and can turn out just perfect.
