Summary of Professional Reviews:
As stated by Kirkus Reviews, this book in a lighthearted book for helping children deal with fears. The final remarks about friendship and bravery will work with young children. As mentioned by Ian Chipman, kids will listen to the rhyming text with the cartoon fish with the illustrated jokes. This book may also help children conquer their fears after seeing what happened.
Review by Ashley:
This book is intriguing because you can sympathize with the pout-pout fish as he tries to conquer his fear of the dark. The plot is engaging and will have the children wondering what happens as they read along. The illustrations compliment the book very nicely and you get a good depiction of what the bottom of the ocean could look like. I truly like how the fish continues on his journey even though it continues to get darker and he is more and more scared. The format of the book helps with the situation he is in because it goes from being high up to all the way down in a trench. The rhyming scheme works very well in this book. For example, "He kept on searching All along the ocean floor, Through a reef, through a wreck, Swimming far from the shore."
This book would be useful when teaching...
The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark would be an interesting book for teachers to read to children to help them deal with any fears. This book can get a discussion going about different fears and that it is okay to have a fear and how to possibly deal with them.
