Review by Katie: Eric Carle uses vibrant colors to display the life cycle of a butterfly. He starts with a little caterpillar and with different sized pages he counts the things that the caterpillar eats. Each item has a hole in the center and has a small caterpillar crawling out the back. The caterpillar gets so full that be becomes a fat caterpillar who couldn't eat anymore, so he made a cocoon. He finally turns into a beautiful colorful butterfly. Eric Carle has done a wonderful job with his illustrations and he helps children to have fun while learning.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar can be useful when teaching the life cycle of a butterfly. A teacher can read through and work on counting with children and even point out what is healthy and not.
