Summary of Professional Reviews: There were four reviews found for this book and they all mentioned the illustrations in the book; the students will enjoy the illustrations because they are hilarious and include skinny-legged characters with googly eyes. Two of them also suggest that students will enjoy it more with the song and will find it more helpful.
Review by Sarah Custard: I believe this book can be very good for beginning readers; the words are simple and are accompanied by pictures that can help the students decipher what is occurring. The students will enjoy the pictures because they are drawn in a comical way and they will also enjoy the storyline because it is very silly hearing that a grandmother would swallow a cow. The students may enjoy the song to help them learn more, or just to have fun. I also think this is a good book because it is a small chapter book for young kids. It will give them an idea of what a chapter book looks like (i.e. the separate ideas or change in scenery) and the length in this book can be useful for young kids because it is not too overwhelming for them.
This story could be useful for a fun activity. Some teachers have a puppet of the old woman (grandmother in this story) with all of the objects or animals that are swallowed throughout the story. The song is fun to do in between learning activities or could be done for parents when they come in to visit. It could also help teach the children about fiction because we do know that a human could not swallow a dog or cow, so it would help them distinguish between real and make-believe.
