Summary of Professional Reviews:
As said by Carrie Hane Hung, this book is a familiar tune with a twist on the fly adventure. The illustrations give a visual of what the animals look like as they are in the grandmother and the food she ate. The character expressions throughout the book enhance the fun and silly nature of the book. Carolyn Phelan stated that for beginning readers this is a short supportive book to help them. She also said that it is great fun for reading alone, entertaining a class, or with a friend.
Review by Ashley:
I like the humor that is involved throughout the book after the grandmother accidentally swallowed Fly Guy. The written text is simple, while the plot allows the children to predict what animal she will swallow next. Since this is a twist on the familiar tale, some children may think that different animals arise so they can make predictions. The illustrations depict the humor of the written words and bring the pages to life with the use of bright colors. The design of the book lends itself to predictions throughout because they children truly do not know what animal is going to come next.
This book would be useful when teaching...
There was an old lady who swallowed Fly Guy would be a unique book to use in the classroom when teaching about fiction and nonfiction. It is apparent that nobody can actually swallow all of those animals and then have the fly come back out. This book would stretch the imagination of the children as they would understand that the things happening cannot happen in real life.
