This is Not My Hat
Author & Illustrator: Jon Klassen
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Year of Publication: 2012
Genre: Fiction
Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: 1
Summary: A fish steals a hat and thinks that he will get away with it.
Summary of Professional Reviews: According to Kirkus Reviews, this book had a first-person narration that follows the thief with a big ego. There is a lot of art displayed while the big fish goes on his hunt trying to find his hat while creating a pleasing counterpoint with the text. For example: "…he probably won't notice that it's gone" shows not the thieving piscine narrator but the big fish looking up toward the top of his own bare head; he clearly has noticed that his hat is gone, and the chase is on! Carrie Hane Hung stated that "The smaller fish thinks that the big fish will notice that the hat is missing and the little fish is responsible for taking the hat. However the illustrations of the characters indicate just the opposite."
Review by Katie: A small fish steals a hat and thinks that he is getting away with it. This fishes thoughts are displayed on the pages as he travels, but the pictures are the opposite of what has been written. This allows the reader to be able to come to their own conclusions and use their own imagination. The pictures are simple, but they leave the reader to use a lot of creativity. This book is a must read for young children.
This is Not My Hat can be useful when teaching children about sharing and not stealing each others items.
