This is Not my Hat
Author & Illustrator: Jon Klassen
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Year of Publication: 2012
Genre: Fiction
Horn Book or Kirkus Reviews rating: 1
Summary: A small fish steals the hat of a big fish while he is sleeping. The little fish swims away and does not think that the big fish will ever find him. He isn't always correct about everything he says.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Hornbook gave this a review of 1. They really enjoyed how the written words are contradicted by the subtly of the pictures. They enjoy how the author "lets readers in on this darkly hilarious joke".
Review by Kitty Anthony: This is a wonderful book to read to young children. Not only does the book teach children a valuable lesson, it is also quite humorous. The students really have to pay attention when they read the book because they need to notice that the illustrations express the opposite of what the text reads. This would be a good book for beginning readers because the repetition of several words and phrases will make this book easier for young readers to understand. I also like how the illustrations are contradicting of the text yet also very simple with a plain black background so that children can focus on the big fish's emotions throughout the story.
This book would be useful when teaching… Teachers can use this book to teach students that it is wrong to steal. This could also be read to students the first week of class and the teacher can talk about sharing. It is also a good book to have the students create their own endings since the author does not tell the readers what happened to the little fish at the end of the book.
