Review by Christine Grasser: The story in Three Bears in a Boat uses imagery in the language that accompanies the beautiful illustrations: “The sail flew open like a wing, and the boat flashed across the water”. Character attributes are also carried by rich language, such as “confused” and “salty”. The plot carries a meaningful lesson about responsibility, and the main characters are portrayed with real human emotions of guilt, blame, and acceptance and forgiveness. I loved the illustrations in the book, and can feel the relationship of the story between the illustrations and the text.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Aside of teaching a lesson of taking responsibility for actions, this is a great story to learn the elements of a story such as plot, setting, and characters. I would also use this book to teach “First, Next, Then, Last” and incorporate a writing response to the story as well.
