Summary: For the Ford Model T (Tin Lizzie's) 100th birthday, grandpa took it out for a spin with his grandchildren only to be greeted by loads and loads of traffic. His grandchildren begin to questions grandpa's saying "you gotta have wheels" when they see how much pollution and danger there is on the road.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Drummond mentions his love of the Old Model T (Tin Lizzie) by having grandpa take it out for a spin for its 100th birthday. Grandpa takes his grandchildren out with him to experience his favorite car. Once the children finally were able to take a ride in the car, the children discovered that there are so many different types of cars on the road that give off so much pollution and that drive so quickly. The children quickly discover that they want to invent cars that run on no gas and that are safer. Drummond fills each page with amazing watercolor pictures that captivate children's eyes. When grandpa tells the children after they discover air pollution that they have to "work it out," they see it as a challenge that they are willing to take on.
Review by Katie Henderson: Drummond clearly loves the old Ford T car. His love of the car shows throughout this entire story. Grandpa takes the old car out for a spin with his grandchildren when the grandchildren begin to realize that cars are what cause air pollution and that they want to create a car that does not do so. This book is great for young children who want to learn about different cars and what they can do to the environment. Drummond coats every page with very impressive sketched watercolor pictures that would captivate a young child's eye. This book will definitely get children thinking!
This book would be useful when teaching...children about air pollution. Teaching air pollution can be a difficult task. Reading this book to young children can open their eyes to see how cars have a lot to do with air pollution. This book can also be a great lesson for a history class about Henry Ford. Henry Ford is mentioned in the end and the beginning of this book. Children can learn not only about his cars, but about his other inventions that swept the nation by storm.
