They also like how the illustrations bring out the whites of the slaves eyes and the white text stands out. Review by Kitty Anthony: I think this is a very simple book that describes such a sensitive topic. The author chose to kept the text minimal and let the illustrations of the slaves tell the story. The illustrations beautifully display the emotions that the slaves are feeling and the fear they experience when trying to sneak out. The text is simple enough for young children to read so they can start learning about such an important topic in American history. This book would be useful when teaching… This book would come in handy when introducing very young children to the topic of slavery. Since the text is very minimal a young student could read the text by themselves but I think it would be more effective if the teacher read the book aloud so that the teacher can explain what the book is about and what slavery actually is. |
