This is a wordless picture book about a young girl who helps a runaway slave escape.
Summary of Professional Reviews:
Children will be moved to go back to the images and put in their own words. The pictures are amazing and tell the whole story. The fact the the little girl sees just an eye tells the whole story of kindness. The drawings with pencil provide great detail to the story. The pencil drawings allowed the illustrator to add great detail which makes this book so great.
Review by Anthony Germani:
This book has excellent pencil drawn images that tell the whole story. The images in this book are breathe taking and the fact that their are no words in this book is symbolic. It symbolizes that the girl in this book cannot tell anyone that she is helping a runaway slave. This is a great story showing unity and that even in the days of slavery there were some white people who helped the slaves escape.
This book would be useful when teaching:
I would use this book when teaching a lesson on the underground railroad and runaway slaves. This book would show children that being a runaway slave was hard and that there were people trying to help them. The symbolism in this book would also be a great topic of discussion in this book. I would lead a discussion on why the author didn't use any words in this book.
