Summary: Way Up and Over Everything is a story about a slave named Jane who sees the miracle of slaves flying away to freedom.
Summary of Professional Reviews: The details of the story and slavery add an immedicay that make the reader sympathize and truley understand the emotions. Jane's surprise and the shock when you see the 5 slaves take off into the air give the reader hope just as Jane felt in the story, telling everyone about the slaves that flew.
Review by Jane Fuscellaro: I thought this book was a creative and gave the hopefulness that slaves felt when they heard of other slaves finding freedom. I thought the 'flying' slaves instead of 'running away' slaves was very creative and I am sure a story told back in the time. The book is about hope and truly does hope justice. The images of stick figure slaves, I think represents the story well.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This story would be a good resource to use when talking about slavery. Student can talk about the feeling of the character such as the slaves and the owner, since this book is so in detailed. Students could also talk about the hope of the story; Asking themselves "would they tell if they were Jane?".
