When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry...
Title: When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry...
Author: Molly Bang
Illustrator: Molly Bang
Publisher: The Blue Sky Press
Year of Publication: 1999
Genre: Fiction
Horn Book rating: 3
Summary: When Sophie has to share her stuffed gorilla with her sister, Sophie gets angry- really, really angry. After she goes to her "secret place" to calm down; upon her return everything is back to normal.
Summary of Professional Reviews: Using bright colors, onomatopoeia, and very descriptive metaphors Bang describes the anger of a young girl when her sister steals her stuffed gorilla. As she runs outside, into the woods, and begins to climb the tree you can feel Sophie's anger subside and she becomes calm; along with the colors of the illustrations.
Review by Terese Wylie: When Sophie gets angry after falling over a dump truck in attempt to prevent her sister from playing with her stuffed gorilla, "she's a volcano, ready to explode" and the illustrations give perfect visuals for Sophie's feelings. Once she runs outside and climbs the tree, Sophie begins to calm down; after a while it is enough to return home. Bang's illustrations change from bright and erratic (when Sophie is angry) to more defined lines and softer colors once she calms down. With the short sentences on the page and use of onomatopoeia, this book is perfect to read to small children and allow them to interact while you read. The overall purpose of the book, which is how to control one's anger, is presented in a way that the young reader/listener will be able to understand.
This book would be useful when teaching…

- When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry... could be the perfect book to read after a child or a few children in the class get angry and are not able to control their anger.
- When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry... could be also used in a lesson on feelings; it shows anger and ways to control it calmly without hurting anyone.
