Review by Jessica Rodriguez: I found this short story to be simple enough for young children to understand and to be able to take the concept of saving keepsakes in a box over a period of time to eventually share with someone. Patricia Lillie uses very simple words and relatable to items young children already have some knowledge on that they may collect some day. In addition, Donald Crews make the illustrations come alive with a simple background and bright colors for the items on the page. Overall, the story has a simple storyline to follow and the illustrations help the words on the page come alive.
This book would be useful when teaching…
- For teaching young children, the twelve months of the year and in the order the months go.
- Also, the teacher can start a mini project from this book if read at the beginning of school year where the children can create their own box, and add one object or item per month that they feel is special. At the end of the school year, you can have the children share their boxes with the class on what special keepsakes they have collect throughout the school year.
- Ideal for grades K through 2nd.
