Review by Christine Grasser: Grace Lin uses traditional Chinese names and other familiar Chinese characters, such as dragons, to tell her story. I enjoyed the journey of Minli as she met different characters, and the author’s choice of different font types boosts the authenticity of this story’s traditional folktale feel. The story is intriguing because of the inclusivity of the Chinese culture, even if this folktale isn't a "traditional" folktale that's been handed down.
This book would be useful when teaching…
This is a great book to introduce cultural fantasy folktales. The text is easy to follow and would be well-suited for a fun read-aloud. This would also be a good book for mini-lessons on plot and conflict.
