Review by Terese Wylie: In this short five chapter book, we learn about the lives of Wiggle and Waggle. They create a song to make their work easier, work together to move a rock, go on a picnic, and celebrate when they finish their work in the garden. Throughout the book, Arnold includes actual facts about earthworms and gardens and even includes a "How Do Worms Help Plants Grow?" and a "Fun Facts About Worms" section at the end of the book. Peterson's digitally colored pencil drawings bring Arnold's words to life, as well as the characters of Wiggle and Waggle. She creates the perfect garden scene for the two worms' adventures. The format is perfect for students who are beginning to read chapter books and also as an educational text.
Wiggle and Waggle can be the perfect book to introduce a science lessons about plants, gardens, and even about how earthworms contribute to the growth of the plants. Also, being a beginner chapter book with a reading level of 2.3, this book will be appropriate for a student who is able to read a few sentences at a time and for long periods of time. It also could be used for students who are at a lower reading level and are starting out with chapter books.
