Summary of Professional Reviews: Jeron Ashford Frame's expressive picture book features an African American boy's inventive descriptions of many moods. The extended metaphors are marvelous displays of creative language use in a book that is accessible and appealing to younger children and a wonderful example of descriptive writing for older students as well. Children everyday recognizable moments-and feelings-are the foundation of this terrific volume. The book uses bluesy rhythms.
Review by Kim Beers: This book really promotes how feelings and colors are incorporated. The title is "Yesterday I had the Blues," which fits it perfectly. While I was reading the book, I could feel the rhythm similar to a blues song. The students would love how upbeat it feels even though some of the emotions that are portrayed are sad. There was also some things that the students could relate too in the story which would keep them more interested in the book as well. The illistrations of the portrayed the color and feeling the character was feeling.
This book would be useful when teaching…
Yesterday I had the Blues would be a great book to teach children about how feelings can be associated with colors. Students can match colors according to the feeling.
Yesterday I had the Blues would be a great story for students to create their own song while learning about eachothers family members and colors/feelings. Students could recreate their own version of this book and since there it goes along with a blues song, the students could sing the song to the class.
